The best bead for your cosmetic formulation

13 Aug

There are so many different exfoliants used in scrubs nowadays from polyethylene, to jojoba, to almond shells, walnut shells, and many more.   Some common factors when determining what exfoliant to use are

  • Ability to remove dead skin cells
  • Ability to smooth skin
  • Ability to clean skin and prevent acne
  • Size and Shape
  • Stability

Polyethylene beads are the most commonly used scrub agent but they are not the best option.  Polyethylene beads are plastic and they are not biodegradable.  Millions of these little tiny beads are getting washed down shower drains and into our watersheds (and eventually our oceans) EVERY DAY! We encourage you to read this article by Hilary Rosner – “Scrubbing Out Sea Life“.

Some better more natural and environment-friendly alternatives are almond meal, apricot meal, and our favorite – Jojoba Beads.

Hydrogenated jojoba oil is ideal for scrub applications because it is:

  • Spherical in shape, which reduces irritation
  • Very Stable, not influenced by pH and water content of base
  • Great for skin, smooth feeling, and moisturizing
  • Has a light specific gravity and can be easily washed out
  • They do not leave micro-lacerations on the skin
  • They are natural and can be ECOCERT approved

In a study done at the Central Research Institute in Nagoya Japan,  jojoba was found to be one of the “the mildest preparations among scrub agents, and even the excessive use for three minutes may induce almost no skin irritation.”

5 ways to GREEN your business

5 Aug

More and more businesses are going green.  Not only does this help the environment but consumers are starting to recognize and purchase green products from green companies.  So what are you waiting for?  Here are some ways your business can go green!

1. Reduce waste – Recycle, Recycle, Recycle!  And get creative – when General Mills looked into reducing their waste they discovered that the by-product of making cheerios could be used for fuel.  General Mills now recycles 86% of its solid waste! The majority of the products Desert Whale sells are by-products of the food industry, so don’t rule out something as waste because you never know!

2. Go paperless – In this day and age communication, filing, and reading can all be done on the computer so make sure to always think before you print.

3. Reduce your carbon footprint – Especially in the cosmetic industry with so much transportation and energy costs it is important for businesses to develop a plan.  Take a step back and look at the big picture.  Exactly how big is your carbon footprint and where can you reduce it?  Maybe its a difference of changing light bulbs, company cars, or using a local warehouse.

4. Green your packaging – Especially in the cosmetic industry, so much waste is a result of packaging.  Recently Unilever repackaged containers for their Suave Shampoo, this saved the company the equivalent of 15 million bottles per year!

5. Become energy efficient – Are the light bulbs you’re using green?  Do those lights really need to be on all day?  Is your A/C programmed correctly?  Do your employees shut down their computers at night?  Little things such as this can reduce your energy use dramatically.  Get an energy audit, develop a plan, and let your employees know how they can help.

Cosmetic advertisements and their effect on women

4 Aug

With all these beautiful, perfect images of women in magazines; it is hard for us to realize just how much of it is fake.  Research has shown that airbrushed images, when taken at face value, have had a very negative effect on the way women view themselves.

Look at this image of Madonna with and without airbrushing.  What a huge difference!  It is easy to see from images like this how unrealistic expectations for beauty are created.

In a paper supported by 44 academics of the Advertising Standards Agency, claims were made that airbrushed images encourage eating disorders and self-harm amongst girls in particular, but boys, too. While this study had a political agenda and may be a bit exaggerated; it is clear to see that airbrushed images do have a negative effect on women.  While the majority of these images are created by the cosmetic and personal care industry it is great to see companies like Dove stand up with their Campaign for Real Beauty where they have pledged to not distort any of their images to create unrealistic and unattainable ideas on beauty.  Check out one of their ads:

Natural is beautiful and we hope the cosmetic industry starts to follow the trend!

The Benefits of Attending a Cosmetic Industry Tradeshow

3 Aug

Perry at Chemist’s Corner blogged about “7 reasons you can benefit from going to a cosmetic chemistry tradeshow

Here are the 7 Reasons:

  1. Learn about new raw materials
  2. Get new ideas
  3. Connect with people at other companies
  4. See what the competition is doing
  5. Technical learning
  6. Observe new trends
  7. Free Stuff

From a supplier standpoint it is easy to see how beneficial it is for cosmetic chemist to attend industry tradeshows.  Tradeshows are one of the few mediums suppliers have to show and educate customers about new ingredients, custom formulations, and their product lines.

Here are some industry tradeshows you may be interested in attending that Desert Whale feels are worthwhile:

What exactly is BIODIVERSITY and why is it becoming a BUZZ word?

2 Aug

Biodiversity is the variety of life (species/plants/animals) in a region.  It is also the study of how those species came to be and the natural patterns that formed to get them there.

The reason biodiversity is becoming so important in 2010 is we are starting to realize that extinction is rising at an alarming rate and much of this is due to human activity.  Here are some astonishing facts:

  • Studies have found that species have been disappearing at up to 1000 times the natural rate, and the group predicts this rate to rise (UBTE).
  • Based on current trends, an estimated 34,000 plant and 5,200 animal species – including one in eight of the world’s bird species – face extinction.
  • Up to 10 per cent of coral reefs – among the richest ecosystems – have been destroyed, and one third of the remainder face collapse over the next 10 to 20 years.

“We are creating the greatest extinction crisis since the natural disaster that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.” [CBT] While species begin to grow extinct we are not only losing diversity but sources for food, medicine, and natural resources.

So what can we do to counteract this?  It all boils down to making sure our needs and waste are in line with what nature can handle.  And we get there by taking action through education, conservation, rehabilitation and prevention.  For more ways you can help click here.

So what does this mean for the cosmetics industry?

The cosmetic industry is one of the largest users of natural ingredients.  It is important that personal care companies not only ensure that their natural ingredients are being harvested in  environmental and bio-diverse friendly ways but also start educating consumers on the importance of purchasing truly sustainable products.
