Rose Hip Oil Benefits

13 Jul

Rose Hip Oil is extracted from the seeds found in the fleshy, bright colored fruit of wild roses.  The fruit, also known as the hips, is harvested by hand from the wild rose shrub (Rosa Canina) that grows in southern Chile.  Rose hips, and extracts thereof, have been taken internally for generations.  The hips contain a large quantity of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).

In recent years, the oil obtained from rose hip seeds has been characterized and found to have beneficial effects when topically applied.  The oil is predominantly triglycerides whose chief fatty acid component is linoleic acid.  Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that must be obtained from one’s diet.  Numerous researches have found that when triglycerides containing essential fatty acids are topically applied, reversal of several abnormal skin conditions occur.  Essential fatty acids are key components of the epidermal lipid bilayer.  This bilayer must be intact in healthy skin.  When the epidermal lipid bilayer is deficient in one or more of its components, severely dry skin is the usual result.

Rose Hip Oil not only provides moisturization by preventing trans-epidermal water loss through simple occlusion, but also bolsters the skin’s epidermal lipids with essential fatty acids.

Avocado Oil and Personal Care

22 Jun

Avocado Oil is a rich oil that readily penetrates the skin due to the presence of Palmitoleic Acid. The oil also contains vitamin A, vitamin, D and vitamin E.

When viewing the fatty acid profile of avocado oil, the most prominent fatty acid is oleic, followed by palmitic and linoleic acids. The fatty acids also contain myristic, stearic, linoleic, and arachidonic.

As a result of its chemical makeup, avocado oil is easily absorbed by the skin and has excellent emollient properties. In 1991, the Department of Food Engineering and Biotechnology, Technion Israel Institute of Technology found that avocado oil significantly increases collagen in the skin which is why it is commonly found in antiaging products.

Avocado Oil is best suited for dry skin and anti-aging applications. With a high content of unsaponifiables, this oil is also an ideal ingredient in soaps and shampoos.
